The symptoms of severe premenstrual tension, or PMT, were first described in Hippocrates’ Diseases of Women, but were only fully documented and accepted in the 1960s. The condition is placed in the category of temporary insanity under the French penal code. In Britain, the PMT defence has twice been successfully pleaded, reducing murder charges to manslaughter.
