Children were rewarded if they could persuade their friends to eat a particularly nasty-tasting cracker. Both girls and boys accepted the challenge, but while girls tended to be apologetic about the task (“It’s their idea, not mine”), avoid direct lies, and cajole their victims by offering to share the tainted snack, boys were more robust – laying, threatening and challenging their victims to submit to the ordeal.
